Community means a lot of things. It means the people and places that surround you on a daily basis. It means the habits, traditions, and unwritten rules that shape your everyday life. It means the bonds, strong or weak, that tie us together as a network of people.

A lot of CrossFitters talk about the “great community” that surrounds CrossFit. But what does that really mean? What does a “community” of people who come together to sweat for an hour or so 5-6 times each week really offer to its constituents?

Accountability

Sometimes, you don’t want to go to the gym. If you’re the only person who knows or cares whether or not you go, it’s easy to let a day when you’re tired or bored or feeling lazy become a day that you don’t work out. Having friends at the gym, who expect to see you there and will be disappointed if you’re not, provides a bit of extra motivation to get your rear in gear. And if that doesn’t do it, the annoying texts and Facebook messages they’ll send you after you miss a class will be a good push to get you off the couch next time.

Support

Whether you have the best day ever in the gym, or you barely make it through the WOD, your fellow Manatees are always there with a fist bump and a word of encouragement. I’ve seen our community pick people up when they fall down time and time gain, and we never miss a chance to celebrate an accomplishment.

Sharing Knowledge

At the box, you’re surrounded by people with similar goals to yours: be healthy, look good, and live a long and happy life. All Manatees are trying to figure this stuff out together, and we can learn from each other as we go along. Maybe one person has mad kitchen skills and can show you how to get together a meal plan for the week. Maybe another struggled with the same movement that’s been your bugaboo, and can provide tips on what helped him or her finally get it. “Peer learning,” as the education researchers call it, is a powerful tool to help you on your health & fitness journey.

Role Models

You’ll have days that you want to quit the workout. You’ll have days that you think that there’s no point, that you should just cut your losses and head home. On those days, you’ll look at your classmates and see that they’re just as tired as you are. They’re just as sweaty, and their labored breaths come just as ragged as yours. You’ll realize that if they can keep going, so can you. And you will.

CrossFit Manatee is a community of people who work hard to improve ourselves and each other. We believe in pushing ourselves and supporting our fellow CrossFitters. We believe that putting forth our best effort in the gym leads directly to living a better life outside of the gym, and we know that we owe a large part of our success to our fellow Manatees, who help us every day on our path to becoming our best.
